Goal setting….It takes a village!
Yes, you read that correctly. Setting goals is an individual task, but keeping them takes a village. The most successful goal setters know that it takes a team, a tribe, a support system to keep the goals you set for yourself. No one succeeds alone…no one! And... behind every successful person, there is a great person or team. (Trust me, I speak from experience).
Now, you might just happen to be one of those kinds of people with an extremely high level of intrinsic motivation so it’s easy for you to stay on track and hold yourself accountable. If this is you, congratulations? This is not the case for most people. Most people require some kind of method to hold themselves accountable of they need to find an Accountability Partner who will do just that.
One of my favorite definitions for Accountability Partner comes from this article which states “Accountability Partners are the people you ask to peer pressure you into doing the things you want to do”. Isn’t this definition spot on?! APs remind you of the goal that YOU SET FOR YOURSELF and help keep you on track to achieving it. Steven Covey said “accountability breeds responsibility”. So how do you find an accountability partner?....
How to find an accountability partner?
1. Find someone you trust to be your accountability partner (a different personality from you is good, maybe better). Let the person know you are looking for honest support and not a “Yes” person.
2. Talk to them about your goals.
3. Get specific with them about actions you will want to take to meet your goals as well as consequences/rewards for taking or not taking them.
4. Set up regular check-in times.
5. Revisit goals and strategies every once in a while to make sure you are on track. (We talked about the importance of revisiting your goals in Part 3 of this series).
You might have been reading that and thinking an accountability partner sounds a lot like a coach or a mentor. Well, your AP certainly can be your coach or mentor but it can also be a friend, spouse, parent, classmate or colleague.
Now, I know that some of you might be reading this and thinking to yourself that you don't need to share your goals with anyone, that way no one will know if you achieve the goal or not. Yes, this is. But…remember what I said earlier. No one succeeds alone…no one.
