Five Steps to Business Success
Step 2-Market Your Expertise
Once you have learned to master your mindset, the next step is to begin to market your expertise. Now is the time to let your light shine! You need to establish yourself as a thought leader and begin to market your expertise to potential clients.
Here are my top tips on marketing your expertise:
Identify Your Market and Claim Your Expertise
Do people know you? Do they know what you do, what you know, and who you serve? Better yet, do YOU know what you do and who you serve? If not, then your first step in marketing your expertise is to identify your target market/industry and claim your expertise.
A target market or industry is a specific, well-defined segment of consumers that a company plans to target with its products, services, and marketing activities. The term "target audience" is a bit narrower; it refers specifically to the group of consumers targeted by advertisements. This article suggests to start to identify your target audience by first identifying yourself. That’s exactly what I did. Because my skills, education, and work experience come from the medical, clinical, and public health backgrounds, and the clients that I love to serve also work in medical, clinical, or public health backgrounds, it was easy for me to identify my market. It did however take a little more work for me to identify my target audience. I will review this in more detail in Step 3.
Build Your Platform and Put Yourself Out There
I bet you think that you have to know everything about a particular subject before you can call yourself an expert. This is not true. An expert is simply someone that has “authoritative knowledge” in a particular subject matter. If you know just a little bit more than your target audience, you already have expertise. Claim it!
Once you have established your expertise, find potential clients who want and need what you have to offer and start to build a community around them. Your initial goal is to start with a small group of loyal fans but always aim to build an empire. It will take quite some time since you will need to position yourself to win their loyalty and trust, but stay the course.
The best approach here is to go all out and become more visible to your prospects (potential clients). And if you are not comfortable with social media, you better get comfortable real quick! Social credibility is instrumental to most business now-a-days. Tap into various platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Find the platform that works best for you and build your presence there.
Final Thoughts
You can't be afraid to put yourself out there when you are marketing your expertise. This is why it's important to start with Step 1 first and master your mindset. You will need to have strategies to overcome fear, imposter syndrome, perfectionism, and self-doubt. These are the self-limiting constructs that will hold you back. You should also expect to do a lot of work for free! At least in the beginning when people don't know you. But that's ok, you need this time to develop your message, your services, and get a strong footing in your industry. Find any way you can to put yourself out there and market your expertise. This can be speaking engagements, podcasts, guest blog writing or anything else that you can do to generate awareness with your target market and audience.
