Last week, I shared how entrepreneurial principles can transform public health initiatives. Listen to Episode 3 of The PublicHealthPreneur Podcast here.

What Does a Consultant Do?

Consultants provide specialized expertise and guidance across many fields — whether it's business development, marketing, IT, legal, or education. Public health consultants, however, focus on improving health outcomes for populations.

They collaborate with a variety of organizations, such as healthcare systems, non-profits, foundations, and academia, and sometimes even corporate clients. The ultimate goal is to help these organizations enhance public health for specific populations.

Public Health Consultants as Entrepreneurs

Being a public health consultant often goes hand-in-hand with being an entrepreneur. Many consultants work for themselves, and this means they need a strong business model to sustain their operations. Whether through a non-profit, for-profit venture, social enterprise, or consultancy service, they are in the business of making an impact while ensuring financial sustainability.

Roles and Responsibilities of a Public Health Consultant

As public health consultants, we drive change in the public health landscape. Our work can involve providing technical expertise, helping organizations implement strategies, or improving health outcomes through well-planned initiatives.

Here are some of the common roles public health consultants take on:

  • Guidance & Technical Assistance: We offer expert advice to governments, healthcare institutions, academia, and communities, assisting them with solving public health challenges.

  • Improving Health Outcomes: Consultants help organizations implement programs, strategies, and initiatives that can positively impact the health of the populations they serve.

Specialties in Public Health Consulting

The field of public health is incredibly diverse. Public health consultants can specialize in areas such as epidemiology, biostatistics, health education, policy analysis, program management, and global health. This variety allows consultants to tailor their services to meet the specific needs of each client.

Opportunities in Public Health Consulting

The scope of work for public health consultants is wide! Some examples include:

  • Assessment & Analysis: Conducting needs assessments and evaluating programs, policies, and systems to identify public health issues.

  • Strategic Planning: Assisting organizations in setting objectives, defining goals, and creating actionable plans.

  • Program Development: Designing and implementing public health programs or interventions, often creating evidence-based strategies.

  • Research & Evaluation: Conducting studies and measuring the effectiveness of public health programs.

  • Community Engagement: Ensuring that public health initiatives are culturally sensitive, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the community.

  • Training & Capacity Building: Providing education, workshops, and seminars to help public health professionals succeed in their roles.

I discuss all these in detail in my book!

Start Where You Are

If you're thinking about becoming a public health consultant, consider this:

  • What are you already doing in your current role?

  • Are you developing programs, serving on committees, or working on strategic planning?

You might be surprised to find that much of what you're already doing can translate directly into consulting work.
